UGH...
I remember those days. No time, no budget and this deep desire to make a difference, to make things matter. Communicate efficiently.
For the sake of the Gospel.
I saw church communication as a ministry and that was in many ways my mission field.
Maybe I couldn't see their faces but I knew there were souls on the other side of every slide, every announcement, every postcard, every bulletin, every mailer.
Real people.
The problem was I wore many hats.
Designer. ProPresenter clicker. T-shirt presser. Web update-r. Video producer (ha!).
Maybe you can relate.
There was never time to stop and plan. Who am I kidding? There was barely time to stop and think.
Flying by the seat of my pants is an understatement.
Insert *sigh* here.
Saturday nights I would sit by my computer waiting for the notes and Scripture for the sermon that would begin just a few hours later.
Sometimes I had a great image for the sermon series (by the grace of God) but had no clue how to turn it into a sermon bumper video.
Other times, I had the perfect sermon bumper but had no idea how to turn it into a banner for the website, a banner for Facebook, image for slides and an image for our newsletter.
Many times we used a blurry screenshot of the video.

And I heard it often from my spouse: "You're not even being paid to do that!"
But I'm glad I've asked myself these questions.
What can I do to create consistent systems and processes?
And how can I make sure the pastors and other leaders love them AND follow them?
And what if we don't have a budget, can we still have a communication plan in place?
But before I tell you what I've found, let me tell you about some myths I've debunked along the way.
BUDGET: "Until I have a budget for communication this will never get better."
ENGAGEMENT: "No one reads announcements and we can't get them to engage."
LEADERSHIP: "Leaders will never understand the importance of communication."
TIME: "I don't have time to do anything else besides chasing deadlines."

I'm Barbara Carneiro. I'm a wife and a mother of three. A geek and a strategist.
I am a church communications mentor and a communications director as well as the owner of a branding agency for churches and Christian ministries.
I accidentally became a church communicator when I encountered Jesus for the first time through a church plant in 2010. I faced the same struggles you face now but the Lord brought me through them and now it's time for me to pass on what I learned.
